Bee and Catch obviously knew each other well enough to joke around, and they both seemed to be the top tier of those who were planning things. Alpha wasn’t the alpha, it was Bee.

As he eavesdropped between tents, Rookie was pretty sure they wouldn’t be able to decide on the perimeter if he were to stand there all day. He didn’t want to step on toes and make suggestions due to his low rank but if they kept it up, he was about to.

Complacency—in this case, timing—in a warzone felt as dangerous to him as how familiar he was wielding weapons.

“In order to make sure something like it doesn’t happen again,” Bee said. “The perimeter should be marked better.”

“More obvious than red? Being guarded regularly would eliminate the need for additional markings,” Catch countered. “Markers won’t prevent an invasion.”

“Additional stakes will remind our people where the safety of our protection ends and deter them from going beyond it.”

“It didn’t deter Lion.”

“Lion was an outlier. Sorry, I know you two were friends, but he was.”

“How about we implement both?” Catch suggested.

Bee shook her head. “We don’t have enough people.”

“We get new people all of the time. Who better? It will help train them to stay alive too.”

Bee displayed reluctance by her silence, so Rookie cleared his throat, intentionally disrupting their discussion. Even he knew what needed to be done and talking about an issue all day would do nothing to solve it, only delay the inevitable.

“How long have you been listening, Rookie?” Catch asked.

Rookie showed himself. “Long enough. I’m sorry about your friend, Catch. You need volunteers. I’m in.”

“I appreciate it. We haven’t told you what needs to be done.”

“You need more people to help guard the perimeter. I’ll do it.”

“Those roles are filled already. You’ve been fitted like the rest. Are you ready for . . . what could be beyond your understanding?”

“I’m ready.”

“Impossible but I respect the attitude.”

“Link up with Alpha,” Bee said. “He’ll be leading Tank, Jester, yourself, and a few others.”

“What about dogs?”

“Charlie and Bravo.”

Rookie tried to think of anything else. “Extra ammo.”

“Stop off at my shop before you head out and I’ll give you as much ammunition as you can carry,” Catch said.

“Understood. Anything else required of me?”

“No,” Bee said. “Once the perimeter is marked, we’ll let you know if we need you for guard detail. Go see Alpha.”

Rookie nodded and turned to go.

“One more thing. Before going to the Moat, relieve yourself here. Make a habit of it. There isn’t always time out there. Ask Jester.”

Rookie chuckled.

“You’re dismissed, Rookie,” Catch said. “Get out of here.”

Bee turned to continue her conversation with Catch, and Rookie hustled to meet up with Alpha. Between tents, he crossed paths with Honey.

“Did you forget about me?”

“Are you kidding? How could I?”

“I hear you’re heading for the Moat.”

“Word travels fast.”

“Every rookie goes. It’s why we’re all here, isn’t it?”

“It must be. You’ve been there.”

“Not for a while. I’m still getting over what happened.”

“How long ago?”

“Months. There’s been a lot of politics lately about protecting women but we don’t need protecting.
